DSAS

Who we are

The Disabled Students Association of Stirling University (or DSAS) aims to represent the voice of any student with a disability, condition or ARUAA on campus.

At DSAS, we focus primarily on disability activism and empowerment, but also arrange social events for students to make new friends and escape the stresses of university life. You do not need to disclose any details to join DSAS, we accept and welcome everyone. We work with the Students' Union to give suggestions on how our campus, events and activities can be more accessible to everyone. We also sometimes work directly with the university to make these improvements.

These are just some of the things we've been able to achieve:

  • Passed motion for at least one quiet hour at all Students' Union and university events (passed 28th March 2019).
  • Worked with the university to get brail signage around the campus.
  • Passed motion for the Students' Union to have an active policy against ableism (passed 7th October 2021).
  • Supported and advised on the development of our campus Sensory room. This was organised by DSAS members and the VP Communities 2022/23. This is located in Cotrell 2A1 (the old student hub), room 3. This will be open from the start of September 2022. Thank you to the Stirling Fund for funding much of the equipment in the space.

The Students' Union Equalities Zone Officer (Disabled) is elected every year at the last Equailites Zone meeting of the year to represent the needs of our disabled students. This is a part-time (voluntary) role, managed by the Union President (full time). The current (2022-2023) Disability Officer is, Nicky Foley, you can contact Nicky by email at: nhf00003@students.stir.ac.uk or contact the Union President for all things Equalities at: president.union@stir.ac.uk

An ARUAA is an Agreed University Record of Accessibility Adjustments, which has been in place as a policy approved by the Education and Student Experience Committee on 10 May 2017. You can find out more about the ARUAA policy and to find out if you can get an ARUAA please contact the Accessibility and Inclusion team by email at: Ask@stir.ac.uk
