Hi, I’m Mark, I’m a third year biology student, I’m 21, a Geordie, ginger and I also just happen to be gay. About me What I will do for you: At the end of the day, If you want an lgbt Officer who cares deeply about the students of this university you know what to do. Vote Mark Charters #1 for LGBT Officer
Ever since I joined this university I have been involved in almost everything lgbt, from my first week at uni joining the lgbt society to campaigning on lgbt issues as the susa lgbt officer and society president. It is because of this strong involvement within the lgbt community that I wish to run for LGBT officer for a second term and build on the success of my previous work for liberation.
Getting Attention:
• Publicise the lgbt society more within Freshers and Re-Freshers to attract new members.
• Reinforce the image of lgbt not only as a social network but as a support group.
• Make myself readily available to all students wishing to discuss any issues be it lgbt related or other via high visibility of campaigns and a highly publicised weekly office hour.
Building Bridges
• Develop links with surrounding colleges and universities to organise events and campaigns to build new friendships and provide the opportunity to have a louder voice on liberation issues.
• Work closely with the lgbt society and their committee to enhance the support role they provide, through increasing resources, attending training sessions and regular meetings with either the society president or committee to get to know their issues.
Campaigns for you!!
• Coming out campaign focused on dealing with your sexuality and ways in which to tell other people at the start of each semester.
• Run campaigns focusing on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia highlighting the pressures faced socially, educationally and professionally.
• Raise awareness of the progression of lgbt rights, the events which helped change a generation and what changes still need to be done.
• Listen to the students out there and campaign on the issues they feel strongest about, through a “what’s bugging you forum” specific to lgbt people.
It’s not about Gay verses Straight… It’s getting rid of Hate
lgbt is not just about fighting for the liberation of the lgbt community but also informing the wider student populous of the continuing struggle lgbt people face and how they can help combat this discrimination.
