Hello, my name is Jodie Hughes and I am really keen on becoming your Woman’s Officer. I am a first year Business Studies and Computing Science student looking to make a difference. I am currently taking an active role in the Women’s Group, particularly with the International Women’s Day Campaign. I am an active member within SUSA including roles such as, Class and Departmental Representative, and as a SUSA representative I was elected to sit on the Welfare and Education Committee, where we discuss issues such as Equality and representation. I also sit on the Finance Committee. I was elected to go to the last NUS Scotland Council Meeting where I became interested in the women’s campaign. I will also be attending NUS Scotland Women’s Conference where I will be representing the women’s campaign for Stirling University. How do I want to make a difference? • Childcare FACT – There are not enough childcare facilities for students to leave their children whilst studying, within Stirling University there are two areas which are currently over subscribed. ACTION - I want to push the university to provide additional areas for student parents to drop off their children in order to make their time at university valuable and stress free. • Domestic and Mental Abuse FACT – 1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, 1 in 8 to 1 in 10 women experience it annually, WHY SHOULD WOMEN HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS? ACTION – I want to help the students of Stirling University to be aware of the day to day issues that as women we have to put up with in order to help prevent them in the future and provide them with the information for where they can find support that is available to them. • Abortion FACT – Every five minutes a women dies because of restrictive laws preventing access to legal and safe abortion. ACTION – I want to create awareness of such horrific statistics to the students within the university and lobby to ensure that it is actually the women’s right to choose. • Women at Work FACT – It’s been over 35 years since the Equal Pay Act was introduced and women and men are still being paid differently, 17% approximately. ACTION – Why should women be paid differently just because they are women? They shouldn’t, and I intend to campaign on this issue so that students at Stirling should not accept this discrimination when they have graduated. The Women’s Group • I hope to organise for outside speakers to come in to chat to the women about specific topics relevant to the group. Vote Jodie Hughes #1 for your Women’s Officer and have your voice heard!
• I hope to also give an extra hour a week for a confidential advice session where students can come and chat to me about any issues that they feel they need to speak to someone about.
