Every year these manifestos promise you the same vague ideas on how to get a better Union – without results. After 2 years of working to make a difference, I think it’s time for action not words. - The University Women’s Officer, tackling the gender pay gap and improving campus childcare.
- Improve academic standards at SSCC level for all four years here.
- Have been a welfare volunteer for the last eight years.
- Has worked at a national level against the spread of tuition fees.
Too often the standards of your education are threatened and your individual welfare is ignored. You need a Union that stands up for you and fights your corner.
HOW:
- Get departments to recognise now in their grading that studying will be harder with less books, so your grades aren’t affected.
- Make sure you get replacement study space while access is limited and that there is enough of both individual and group space when finished.
- Ensure the ‘Enhanced RBR’ stocks the books you need.
- Win a bigger RBR section.
- Push for longer opening hours.
- Ensure fines stay low and are reinvested in your education.
HOW:
- Work at every level to ensure no more cuts in your class time.
- Pressure departments to offer recorded lectures on WebCT with lecture notes at least 24 hours in advance.
- Work with the Careers Development Centre, ensuring you get the support you need to get the right graduate job.
HOW:
- Revamp the Advice and Support Centre making it larger and more mobile.
- A reliable Nightline service that’s always there for you.
- Free legal advice, by working with the Citizens Advice Bureau.
- A University that is 100% accessible. There shouldn’t be one corner of the campus you cannot reach.
HOW:
- A real voice for international students, with better language support, plagiarism information and representation for the new International Study Centre.
- Nursing and Midwifery students that aren’t ignored, through more flexible library hours and out-of-hours support.
- Better support for what mature students need, including childcare on campus.
- Independent liberation campaigns with 100% support and an improved Working Group.
HOW:
- Provide each sports club with a First Aid kit, ensuring at least two in every club get the training to go with it.
- More work on student health and sexual health issues.
- Improved awareness of mental health support.
