Tom Spencer

Every year these manifestos promise you the same vague ideas on how to get a better Union – without results. After 3 years of working to make a difference, I think it’s time for action not words.

MY EXPERIENCE
- Been involved in the Union for all three years since being at Stirling.
- Two years on the Executive as Student Activities Officer & Publicity Officer.
- Been the President of 3 clubs, starting 2 from scratch.
- Taken a leading role in the student movement across the UK.
- In first year organised a protest to get the lecturer strike ended.

MY MANIFESTO
Our union is close to closure. Our library will soon be redeveloped. Most struggle to make ends meet. You need a Union that doesn’t sit back and let it happen.

Stop the constant rises in University rent and fight against dodgy landlords.
HOW:
- Win a two-year rent freeze on all university accommodation. It was won in Edinburgh. With a strong Union we can win it here.
- Ensure any future rises in rent only come with improvements in service.
- Name and shame dodgy landlords.
- Work with Stirling Council to set up an official Landlord Accreditation Scheme.
- Fight to ensure that you get your rent deposits back with a new National Deposit Scheme.

Work to put more money in your by pocket
HOW:
- Campaign nationally to return to a system where students who work don’t get taxed for their earnings.
- Work with SAAS and The Student Loans Company to win bigger loans and a more flexible system allowing you to choose when you get your cash.

A Sports Union that gets the funding and support it needs
HOW:
- Increase the Sports Union budget by 5%, freeing up thousands for the SU. It’s budgeted, we’ll deliver it.
- Back up sports clubs in getting access to the facilities they need.

Make sure you are in control of your new library and are not affected by the works.
HOW:
- Ensure the ‘Enhanced RBR’ stocks the books you need with a fast retrieval service.
- Create a communications network between the Library, the Union and you.
- Get departments to recognise in grading that studying will be harder with less books, so your grades aren’t affected.

Run campaigns that really change things
HOW:
- Win internet access for all University accommodation.
- Ensure adequate freezers, fridges and microwaves in all University Accommodation.
- Secure more printers and colour printers across the campus

Lead a Union that really changes
HOW:
- Set up a five year plan for SUSA. Sabbaticals come and go. We need long term direction if Stirling student’s lives are going to improve.

Online manifestos are limited to 500 words. We have a 150 point, 6600 word manifesto with even more detailed plans for what we want our Union to achieve. Please ask if you want to read it.
