Elections 2010 - Results

Union Elections 2010 Results

How the results work

The candidates are elected using the Alternative Transferable Voting system, which means they are chosen by preference and must receive more than 50% of the vote before elected. If a candidate gets more than 50% (or the 'quota') just through the number of people who gave them their first preference then they win straight away.

If 50% isn't reached however then the candidate with the lowest number of votes gets eliminated and their votes redistributed to the remaining candidates, based on what voters put as their second preference. This is repeated until a candidate has reached more than 50% or there are no more candidates left to eliminate.

Also, in every election 'Re-Open Nominations' or 'R.O.N.' is a candidate. This provides the voters with the option of not choosing any of the students running, and instead opts to re-run the election for that position again.

When a referenda item is being voted on the system is the same, only the 'candidates' are YES, NO or ABSTAIN. Referenda items must also reach a quoracy of 1/40th of the student population to be accepted.

Unfortunately no one ran for the positions of Mature Students' Officer, Post Graduate Students Officer or Black Students' Officer. These will all be available to run for in a By-Election in the Autumn.

The Returning Officer for the Count and Election was Natalie Maver, NUS Scotland.
