Rhianna Humphrey

Rhianna Humphrey #1 for Union President

The union’s work over the last year, to support and develop, to entertain and engage, has been focused on you, the students, and we think why stop there? There is so much that we have done this year which we can build on and improve in the coming year. There are so many students and so many issues that we can unite together to ensure that the actions and opinions of every student matter.  And that is why we as a team have decided to run in this election.

Make it Matter Vote Rhianna, Jamie, Mark and Ross #1 online on the 22nd/23rd of March

What we will deliver for students:

Keep students as the focal point of the union – Student representation is often only the views of the officers you elect, we need to be able to engage with as many students as possible on all the issues. We pledge to take the issues to you and represent your views not simply our own.

Better representation and support – Our representation and engagement isn’t good enough. Nursing and midwifery students, part time and distance learners need to have a voice. The Course rep system is broken, there are amazing course reps out there, but there are not enough of them and they are not supported as they should be.  We will revolutionise the course rep system getting larger university buy in and allow reps to shape their own degrees. Nursing and midwifery students and part time and distance learners will get officers dedicated to their representation and development to support greater engagement.

International students’ language support – International students come here to study, for experience and to gain a better understanding of British culture. Many International students, however, find it difficult to communicate effectively with the locals. We plan to work with departments, the international student communities and the Tandem project to support these students throughout their degree.

Fight to Keep Halls for Students – The University is currently reviewing the residences on and off campus with a view to possibly lease these to private contractors. We pledge to keep the residences student focused throughout this process ensuring high quality accommodation but at a student friendly price.

Reduce the effect of Academic Cuts– it is no secret that public sector funding is getting cut by the government, Universities are calling for increased tuition in England and the debate will hit Scotland soon. We pledge to fight increases to tuition fees and to ensure that those academic cuts do not harm your educational experience.

A Library open when you need it – The new library will be ready in just under 7 months. As part of the redevelopment, opening times are under review and we will push for extended opening hours all year round with 24 hour access during exams so you can get access to the books you need when you need them.

Hold Sabbatical Question Time – Sabbaticals are often only held to account by those engaged in the system and never to the student body. We want to have open Question and Answer sessions in the Atrium every month so you can ask us what we are doing for you and why.

Host events for the non traditional student – the idea of a student has changed from what it used to be, over 18% of students at Stirling are international, 21% are Part time, and 43% are mature. The students’ union needs to diversify its mix of events to cater for all students and not simply the undergraduate home student. We plan to work with the new Postgraduate Officer, Liberation Officers that wish to take part, and actual students to host events and activities so that all students can benefit from their union.

Support liberation campaigns to actively win equality for all – Liberation is often overlooked and dependent on the outgoing and incoming officer relationship. We will support and develop the liberation campaigns and officers so that each campaign can autonomously win social and educational change for their community and have the continuity they deserve.

Reward work done within union for students – Many students put a lot of work into making uni better and fun through clubs and societies, sports clubs, course reps, student officers and welfare volunteers. This work improves the student experience and encourages a campus community. We feel that this work should be recognised and we pledge to implement a nationally recognised award system for all volunteers in the union.

Develop the off campus community – Students are often viewed as disruptive and detrimental to the local area. However Students make Stirling and we need to work at changing the perceptions of our wider community. We will develop projects focused on community engagement and local participation such as a community garden, youth leadership project like Brownies and Scouts, and local charity work.

An environmentally responsible Union – Students have asked for the choice to eat fair trade and ethical food in a union that is striving to be environmentally friendly. We will bring fair trade, vegetarian, and kosher food and drinks options to the union so every student can use our facilities as well as reducing the union’s carbon emissions by 15%.

A drink aware union - Student unions are often viewed as hypocrites for promoting responsible drinking yet promote deals in a bar for 99p. Governments are discussing increasing the drinking age to 21 yet again to combat irresponsible drinking. We feel that a student union should reflect its members’ wants and needs but also provide the support that is necessary to ensure that we all have a good time. We will actively campaign against any rise in the drinking age and work towards a more responsible and safe community through better support and advice.

Highland and island campus inclusion – This year we created the Highlands and Islands Officer to allow greater representation for students in our satellite campuses. This year working with this officer we will deliver what these students really want. Sports facilities, better academic representation, and an activities committee will start the ball rolling for a greater student experience.
