A straightforward manifesto from an unusual candidate… GRANT CROCKETT – AN UNUSUAL CANDIDATE I am not the usual sabbatical candidate. I cannot list an extensive CV of officer positions or campaigns I have spearheaded. I have not been involved with the union from my first semester. But I can talk about my experience as a student. What your Union should be: · ENGAGEMENT WITH THE STUDENT BODY. I believe the Union should be a vibrant and diverse reflection of all its students. It should engage with you to help with your interests and listen to your views and ACT on them. The Union should be reaching out to those “ghost students” that go back and forth to class bypassing the union and encouraging them to get involved with things they feel passionate about. · YOUR IDENTITY. I believe that your Union should have a sense of identity and community that we can all be proud of. The Union should treat you like a grown up. You’rw dealing with your own money, jobs and prospects so you should be free to make up your own mind about something that affects YOU! We will get you the facts and you make an informed decision. It’s better for you so it’s better for us. · YOUR EXPERIENCE. Four years is a short time and will fly by. We want you to be able to make the best of that time from the very start. We will provide you with all the best opportunities, from Nights in the Union to careers fairs and information on internships and volunteering. · YOUR LEARNING.Stirling is facing course mergers and staff redundancies. Regardless of Union politics, I am committed to always acting for your education. A compromise in quality of teaching and your education is simply not acceptable. · REPRESENTATION. Representation is nothing without communication. This Union needs to do more to let students from all walks of life know their views are heard and represented to higher bodies on a range of issues. If we’re representing you but we’re not listening to you somewhere we’ve dropped the ball. · THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. I grew up around here, and let me tell you Stirling has alot more going on than students seem to notice or give it credit for. Similarly, I believe many in the community do not know enough about the good work and interests of Stirlng students. I would like to work closer with Stirling Council to strengthen ties with community. The Union will work with clubs and societies and sports teams to help them create an arts fesitval to share with the local community- displaying our talent and opening doors for future events, careers and opportunities. · NATIONAL COMMUNITY. There are many issues accross the country affecting students here in Stirling. Tuition fees loom large on the horizon. Vast waves of the student population live on average £2000 below the poverty line (Cubie Report 1999). I want to make a stand on this. · THE SURVIVAL OF THE UNION. Your Union will always rely on a yearly block grant from the University. But this grant is not set on any formula. THIS GRANT wants to lobby the University to commit to a formula so that we’re always given the appropriate level of funding to support every one of us. VOTE GRANT CROCKETT FOR STUDENT UNION PRESIDENT
