“Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.” (www.fairtrade.org.uk)
“To make the rich work harder you pay them more. To make the poor work harder you pay them less.” This quote, I believe, sums up why Fairtrade is important, Fairtrade is important because everyone is born with the same rights but, due to modern society, the country they are born in or political ineptitude, these rights are not always recognised. This is why Fairtrade is so important to me as it is the main body fighting for people to have equal opportunities throughout the world.
I am also very passionate about environmental issues. I believe that the more we can do to fight climate change, the better. I believe that everyone should follow the motto “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”.
I am Alasdair Lemon. I am a first year Marine Biology student and I am running for Environmental and Ethics Officer. I have a strong belief in combating climate change and pollution as it will affect the future of my career. I was actively involved in the Environmental Club at my old school. I am very enthusiastic about the environment; I actively recycle and have got my friends involved. Encouraging others to take make small and easy changes eg. by recycling, is a vital way in helping to combat global warming. I also established a Fairtrade stall in the library of my old school which led me to joining the Fairtrade/Humanitarian Club, which dealt with promoting Fairtrade and humanitarian issues. I have also been actively involved in Oxfam for two and a half years where I was in charge of Fairtrade in our local branch: this included ordering, unpacking, displaying and promoting Fairtrade products. I am also applying to be a Climate Change Ambassador for Scotland through Oxfam, which entails me representing Oxfam and “Roars not Whispers” at a series of events in Scotland and also entails me insuring that the Scottish Climate Change Bill is implemented in my local area.
If elected I shall dedicate my time to:
· Having recycling facilities installed in every kitchen in halls.
· Setting up a weekly stall selling Fairtrade products.
· Reducing prices of Fairtrade and expanding the Fairtrade range of products available in the university vending machines.
·Promoting Fairtrade and Environmental issues throughout the university and working towards gaining Fairtrade status for the university and improving our environmental reputation.
· Using recycled paper in all the university printers and photocopiers.
· Providing ink cartridge recycling points across the campus.
· Introducing motion sensors into the new kitchens and bathrooms as the halls are refurbished.
