AirTV Manifesto
Gavin Hugh
Student Number 1510719
Hey folks! I’m Gavin Hugh, a Film & Media with English Studies student, and I’m running for the position of AirTV Station Manager.
I’ve had a lot of experience in being both a member of and helping to run AirTV. I first joined in 2006 during my first year, being keenly interested in film-making, television, and creative writing. Since then, I’ve held both the Head of Creative Programming and Deputy Station Manager positions for AirTV, and have also worked as the Film Section Editor for Brig. I have contributed much to the society throughout my three years, such as running many training, establishing the AirTV Writer’s Room to encourage scriptwriting (which has since been successfully expanded as the AirTV Production Room), and the very successful AirTV Lock-In nights, where opposing teams of students are given three hours in which to think up, film, edit and present a short film in order to win a prize for the best film. These in particular have been a fun and exciting way of generating content and getting new members involved.
I am a highly organised person, with a confident, friendly and approachable personality, and have made many strong and lasting friendships within the society. I believe I have great leadership skills, and enjoy taking my time to help members wherever I can. As such, I feel that I have the experience, commitment, and enthusiasm to lead the society in the coming year as Station Manager.
I have many ambitions for the future of AirTV. The society still has vast potential waiting to be tapped, and I hope to work towards developing the society by building on the fantastic work Kim Delaney has done this year as the current Station Manager. I believe that all of my aims are achievable with the right enthusiasm and commitment, and I am completely dedicated towards achieving these goals;
Making AirTV Readily Available
A frequent question asked around campus has always been; “Where can I watch AirTV?”
The lack of advertising for AirTV shows within Studio, and the lack of a set timetable for when they would air, meant students have often been left in the dark as to where and when they could see AirTV. I am ready to change this. I will start each semester with a clearly advertised timetable for shows, in addition to showing content on the AirTV iTunes pod cast (to be fortnightly) available on the new website; www.watchairtv.co.uk
I will aim to emulate the successful Brig model by having a limited number of editions each semester, but ensuring that they are of the highest quality that they can be at a rate of roughly once a month throughout each semester. In addition to this, each semester will begin with a show prepared throughout the holidays, giving roughly four complete shows each semester. By having a timetable, members will have targets to aim towards, encouraging them to work efficiently, while audiences will be able to expect the show, be ready to watch it, and enjoy AirTV on a regular basis.
How to Develop AirTV
I will begin each semester with a clearly defined schedule of society meetings and events, publicly available for all members. In the past, AirTV has occasionally problems with committee organising events at the last minute, and members have not known what to expect at meetings. I wish to start each semester with a pre-planned timetable set out with the committee before semester begins, so members can know what events to look forward to.
Continue to build on the fantastic website AirTV has created under Kim Delaney. The new website (www.watchairtv.co.uk) has already been a big success, and I hope to expand its features in various ways, such as creating user profiles for members, ratings and comments systems for shows, and archiving older AirTV shows. I am keen to develop this website with the committee and member feedback.
I will work with the SUSA Finance Committee to sell off older and redundant AirTV equipment which is no longer useful for the society (such as VHS camcorders and cassette players), in order to replace it with new, up-to-date film-making technology for the society which will help give members creative flexibility to film in new and exciting ways.
I will continue to help get members into industry events such as the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Glasgow Film Festival. However, while many AirTV members have attended as journalists, I will aim to get as many members as possible into festivals as Industry Delegates, letting them network with film industry insiders and improve their opportunities for work within the industry. In addition to this, I will also encourage and work towards getting AirTV films showcased within these festivals.
I will organise more fund-raising activities, such as hosting themed screening nights throughout the semester, such as a Halloween night or a Valentine‘s Day romance night. This offers an opportunity to showcase previous AirTV work based around a specific theme or genre, and gives members an opportunity to see their work projected onto a big screen well before the yearly AirTV Oscars. There are also many simple ways of fund-raising such as toastie-sales in the Chaplaincy, which many societies have done yet AirTV has never taken advantage of. I will organise and encourage members to participate in these events.
A dedicated focus on acquiring essential requested equipment; such as buying a second editing computer to alleviate the heavy demand on our existing one, additional hard drive space, exterior lighting kits and gels, dolly tracks, a fig-rig, and much, much more.
Offering bi-weekly, hands-on training sessions, to encourage members to create and improve the quality of AirTV content and each member‘s confidence in producing their own short films.
Better communication with members with weekly updates using e-mails and FaceBook. Members will be contacted at least once a fortnight with information as to what projects and what events are taking place, to keep them informed and motivated.
Reuniting the Departments of AirTV
In the past, there have been individual meetings for separate AirTV departments on different days, and because of this many AirTV members have spent many hours of their week at different meetings in order to stay involved. This is time-consuming, restricting their time for becoming involved in other societies, and of course, limits time to do their university work!
I want to try and merge these separate meetings into a single expanded Production Room, where rather than simply having a Creative meeting, all of the different departments would take it in turns to discuss their upcoming projects. Sport, News and Music, which have often seen less members in the past compared to Creative, will then be able to present their projects to all members, and those looking for projects to work on may find things they would otherwise not be aware of.
By doing this, we will building upon the fragmented elements of AirTV to create a more cohesive society where members have opportunities to work on many more diverse projects.
Improving the Quantity and Quality of Content
I will put a lot of emphasis on stimulating and encouraging members to become involved with and create content for all of the departments within AirTV, particularly encouraging Sport, News and Music while maintaining the success of Creative;
AirTV Sportwill be aimed to work more closely with the Sports Union, filming live sports matches such as campus tournaments like the Intramural football league, and broadcasting the highlights of matches on the AirTV show and podcast. Sport will also be pushed to seek interviews with professional athletes, give coverage of the local sports teams in Stirling, and many of the sports projects taking place within the community and letting students know how they can become involved with them.
AirTV Newswill be enhanced to bring you more news which is relevant, interesting and affects students at Stirling University, making AirTV News just as relevant as Brig as a resource you’ll want to come back to stay in the know with what’s going on in Stirling and around campus. News will aim to give in depth reporting as to what is happening, why its happening, and how it affects you within your university. As well as this, we will focus on local news within the local community, and any significant developments within the city will be covered so students can stay in the know.
AirTV Musicwill be focused on giving publicity to local independent bands within Stirling, as well as giving student bands and musicians a chance to showcase their work and present their potential. This will be in addition to continuing the many high profile band interviews the music department has achieved. My aim is to make AirTV Music an exciting and integral part of the local music scene, and encourage student bands to showcase their talent.
AirTV Creative will be encouraged to continue their fantastic work, with more Creative-based events such as the Lock-In nights and group projects. Members will also be encouraged to create their own short films by growing in confidence with equipment, and to be given full support by committee in organising and making their movies.
AirTV as part of SUSA and the University
I will focus on cross-breeding talent between SUSA’s other media societies, Air3 and Brig, to develop a cohesive body of media groups with shared media talent.
Offering filming for other societies, such as continuing to film plays for SUDS and the yearly Air3 Awards. I aim to make this a more prominent service, giving clubs and societies a chance to publicise themselves and their activities through AirTV.
Build stronger and better connections with the university’s Film & Media department. The department is regarded as one of the best in Scotland and AirTV should seek to capitalise on this by bringing along guest speakers within it, and encourage the department to send students to us for extra experience.
Hosting nights within the Robbins, such as the AirTV Film Quiz and Transmission, which raises funds, boosts our profile, and allows AirTV to be part of the student community.
A More Sociable, Friendly AirTV
I aim to focus on making the society more sociable, accessible, and public! In the past, AirTV has occasionally suffered due to a lack of social events within the society. I am keen to develop this side of the society, to encourage friendships within AirTV and to give members a chance to get to know each other better. Even going to Studio with members after meetings is a simple way to encourage communication and friendships between members. Organising nights (and days) out for members to socialise should and will be an integral part of AirTV.
Finally
As you can see from all of the ideas which I have listed above, I am extremely passionate and dedicated towards AirTV. It is the society I have had the most enjoyment from throughout my time at university, and the one I believe I can help develop and grow throughout the coming year. If you agree with my proposals and want to see AirTV unlock its potential, then I would appreciate your vote to help make it happen. I wont let you down, because AirTV means so much to me.
I believe I can really make these differences within AirTV. Vote for me and I guarantee I will do all I can to make these ambitions a reality.
Thanks for taking the time to read this… and keep watching AirTV!
