Graeme McLaughlin

My name is Graeme McLaughlin and I am a second year Law student, from Glasgow. I really want to become your Equal Opportunities Officer because I want to help make a difference and make SUSA better. I have been an active member in SUSA since first year in my role as a Class and School Rep for the School of Law where I sat on SUSA council. I have worked with a broad range of people in my working commitments and have been formally trained on Equal Opportunities. I want to ensure the Equal Opps policy is fully implemented and want to raise awareness of the need and urgent action required in respect of Equal Opportunities.

Firstly, there is a need for engagement. I want to involve people from all the different groups within the university community to help create an Equal Opps ethos.

How do I intend to do that?

  • Stronger Links with the liberation groups
  • Frequent contact with the liberation OWSRs
  • Liaise with the Sports Union President regarding Equal Opps & discrimination in Sport
  • Floating the idea of an Equal Opps Sub-Committee within the Welfare Committee
  • Support Network for the liberation clubs & societies

I want to involve other clubs & societies that are relevant to Equal Opportunities such as the Law Society, the political societies and the religious groups. I think the religious groups need to be tackled as in today’s diverse climate religious discrimination needs to stop but is often overlooked by the liberation issues as they seem to be more well known. I also want to engage with the Student Advice & Support Centre to help tackle issues brought to their attention by students regarding issues under the Equal Opportunities heading.

Secondly there is a need for change. When the message out there is that people can be outcast and subjected to degrading treatment on the basis of their identity, then we need to change the message.

  • General Discrimination
FACT – One of the largest forms of discrimination is stereotyping people and groups on the basis of their identity.
ACTION - I want to engage with all the students within the university by pushing the idea that people are individuals. They should not be judged on the basis of their identity or status. If judgment is necessary it should be based on their character and their personality.
  • Disability
FACT – Only 3.8% of students in the University of Stirling are registered disabled and shockingly only 3.4% of all students in Scotland are registered disabled.
ACTION – I want to engage with the University and NUS Scotland to understand the difficulties faced by disabled people of all debilities and help implement a process to tackle the physical and other barriers preventing an increase on disabled students.
  • LGBT
FACT – A disturbing 86.2% of LGBT school students reported being verbally harassed, 44.1% were physically harassed and 21.1% were physically assaulted furthermore 31.1% of incidents that were reported were ignored by school staff. 41.5% of LGBT school students do not plan on going into Further or Higher Education.
ACTION – I want to convey the message that abuse and harassment of any kind to anyone is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. I want to prioritise the message that any instances of discrimination on any ground will be dealt with adequately. I want to portray the message to LGBT school students that University can be an enjoyable experience for all regardless of their sexuality – even if they themselves are not ready to “deal with it”.
  • Race
FACT – Black people make up only 3% of the student population and are more likely to leave school with no formal qualifications. Asian students make up only 9% of students.
ACTION – Diversity is an integral part of any community and it is important to encourage more minority groups to become involved in Higher Education. I intend to communicate with the Black Student’s Officer to potentially lobby appropriate organisations for campaigning publicity and support.
  • Women at Work
FACT – It’s been over 35 years since the Equal Pay Act was introduced and women and men are still being paid differently, 17% approximately.
ACTION – It is appalling that in today’s society we should accept that women are being paid less than men BECAUSE they are women. I intend to liaise closely with the Women’s Officer and the Women’s Group to lobby for the Equal Pay Act to be fully implemented.

Every student/staff member no matter what their background IS entitled to equal rights and opportunities as their peers and colleagues. It is important that every student has the best university experience possible. I am a great believer in the “work hard, play harder” view and this should be achieved in the most enjoyable and stress-free way possible for everyone. My aim is not to push or take political correctness to an extreme level but simply raise awareness that we are ALL equal.
YOU ARE NOT A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN; I AM NOT A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN!

Vote Graeme McLaughlin #1 for your Equal Opportunities Officer and have your voice heard!
